ILLUMINATION MINUS THE GUESS WORK

At Mabone, we believe in the value of doing a proper assessment and lighting design. Now, you might be wondering: WHY?

This is how we ensure that our client complies and conforms with the lighting standards stipulated in the OSHAC or Mine Health and Safety Regulations. By performing an in-depth assessment, we take the guesswork out of illumination, removing underlighting and over-lighting from the equation. This allows us to design the best possible solution for every project, and tick the boxes of performance, comfort, desired outcome and return on investment.

Now, let’s talk lighting design. Here we consider the maintenance, which determines and considers the lumen’s depreciation over its lifetime, while also taking environmental elements, like dirt and reflectance into account. Two keywords we consider are glare and uniformity ratios.

  • The uniformity factor is determined by measuring the maximum and minimum lux levels. The closer these levels are, the better the uniformity.
  • By using the correct optics in the design, we eliminate light pollution, which assists the Dark sky initiative.

Key factors mapped out:

  • Calculation algorithm used
  • Average indirect fraction
  • Height of luminaire plane
  • Height reference plane
  • Average illuminance
  • Minimum illuminance
  • Maximum illuminance
  • Uniformity Diversity Ud

How We Work

Clients often ask us about the Mabone process. So, let’s take you on a quick journey of how we create practical lighting designs for our customers.

NEW DEVELOPMENT

  1. First, our client supplies us with a PDF or DWG drawing for their new development.
  2. Our team uses this document to build a structure to scale in our lighting design software.
  3. After determining the required lux levels, we select a suitable luminaire. We are proud to partner with BEKA SCHREDER Luminaires – leaders in light distribution technology.

EXISTING STRUCTURE

  1. We start with a site visit to do an assessment of the building or space. This involves measuring the area and taking note of the obstacles that can affect light distribution.
  2. We then do a lighting survey to determine what lux level the current installation is achieving.
  3. Using our lighting design software program, we recreate the area or the building, using our light fittings.

EXAMPLE OF 3D LUMINANCE

During this process, we are able to determine the luminaire specification, such as wattage, light distribution (optic), amperage, mounting arrangement, uniformity, and maintenance factor. Our lighting design software then calculates the lux level on the lighting design, after depreciation.

WHY IS GOOD LIGHTING IMPORTANT?

  • Mobility and visibility of both the company goods and its people
  • Where people work with machinery, good lighting ensures consistency and safety
  • Security is key! Low light invites criminals to engage in suspicious activity
