Underground work is already one of the toughest jobs in the world. It’s hot, it’s dusty, and it’s physically demanding, but it’s also essential. Now imagine doing that job with poor lighting, where every shadow makes the work harder and every flicker of light can mean a safety risk. That was the reality for one of South Africa’s platinum mines when they came to us. Their substations needed consistent, reliable lighting but constant voltage fluctuations underground made that nearly impossible. And in an environment where safety depends on visibility, “good enough” simply isn’t good enough.
THE PROBLEM:
The mine’s operating voltage underground is 110V, but constant voltage fluctuations were making it difficult to maintain reliable lighting. In substations, the safety standard is 100 lux vertical on the control panels, but few luminaires can operate consistently in such harsh, unstable conditions. Poor visibility was making an already challenging job even more difficult, and “good enough” simply wasn’t an option.
THE SOLUTION:
After a detailed assessment, we identified the BEKA Schréder LEDNOVA MIDI 70W luminaire as the ideal fit. Its universal driver operates on 90–265V AC, allowing it to perform reliably despite the mine’s daily voltage fluctuations. Once installed, the results were immediate. The substations not only met the 100lux requirement on panels but also benefited from bright, uniform floor lighting. Shadows and flickering were eliminated, and the environment became safer and easier to work in.
